Textbook (optional): Gelfand, Fomin: Calculus of Variations.
This is an affordable book from Dover Publishers; its contents overlap
with the course is about 80%. I will hand out my own homework and rely on my
own course notes, so technically you are not required to have the book.
Course notes: Some may be handed out in handwritten version later;
inasmuch as I get to typeset them all, I am posting them
here, and they will be updated gradually:
course notes, latest update Apr 16
The very last part is in a separate file (that I typeset years ago),
with a bit of overlap with
the end of the notes, and somewhat different notation that I haven't gotten
around to adjust. This file is here:
The `royal route' via Hilbert's invariant integral
Here I have a separate concise summary
of necessary and sufficient coefficients available, which relates back to
pp 12-13 of the course notes.
Homework (this file may be updated occasionally;
slight update done on Jan 20)
If somebody finds it convenient to have it, here is
the LaTeX source code for the homework.
Final exam scheduled by university policy as a function of the
meeting time of the course:
For this class, it is: Tue, May 06, 10:15-12:15
