Workshop Sessions

Facing Challenges [FC]

1-2pm

Prior to the workshop, participants will be asked to electronically report challenges encountered in GTA PD. Organizers will use this information to develop de-identified scenarios based on those problems, to be used as discussion springboards and/or role-play activities for workshops.

Aim: To identify, reflect on, and develop possible responses to commonly encountered challenges in GTA PD.

Measuring Sticks [MS]

10-11am

Attendees will share observation tools and survey instruments they use for assessing GTA teaching practice and GTA PD programs. Before the workshop, organizers will collect various instruments from research and from participants, and workshop facilitators will lead activities to familiarize participants with these tools.

Aim: To identify and showcase a variety of instruments that would be useful in GTA PD and familiarize participants with how to access and use them.

Diversity Matters [DM]

11-12pm

Differences in perspectives and identities, among GTAs, students, and faculty mentors, presents affordances for learning and growth. Paths for learning through diversity and learning from diversity in GTA PD contexts will be discussed.

Aim: Discuss how diverse backgrounds influence learning and identify ways in which GTAs can be mentored in navigating diversity, such as maintaining inclusive and respectful learning environments.

Instructional Design [ID]

2-3pm

Faculty are the primary instructional designers of postsecondary education, creating materials and environments for learning. When and how should GTAs, future faculty, learn and be entrusted with instructional design? Facilitators will discuss how GTAs participate in task/course/discussion design work, and aspects of varying levels of faculty guidance.

Aim: Review relevant research and identify areas of need for future research and development in the area of GTAs’ instructional design practices.

Assessment Recommendations [AR]

3-4pm

For GTA PD programs, what types of information should be collected and reviewed for purposes of improvement? Participants will share ideas about this question, will look at relevant research, and will compile recommendations for assessment practices.

Aim: To collaboratively develop recommendations for the assessment of GTA PD programs.
