The Finite Element Circus

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Fall 2009

Time and Location

The Finite Element Circus will be held at the University of Tennessee on October 16-17, 2009.

The Friday (October 16) session will take place from 1:00pm to 6:00pm and the Saturday (October 17) session will start at 9:00am. Both sessions will be held in room 307 in the Science and Engineering Research Facility (SERF). A campus map can be found here. The SERF is located at M5 on the map.

Directions to the Campus

The closest airport is Tyson-McGhee Airport (TYS), which is approximately 15 miles from campus. Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Northwest Airlines, United, and U.S. Airways all provide service to Knoxville. Driving directions to the University of Tennessee from the airport and from the major highways entering Knoxville can be found here. Taxi service is also available from the airport to UT and to hotels in Knoxville. The cost from the airport to UT and Knoxville downtown is about $30.

Accommodations

A block of 20 rooms has been reserved at Knoxville Downtown Holiday Inn with a special rate at $83 per night + tax. When you make your reservation, please mention the Finite Circus for the Math Department at UT. For reservation, please call 1-888-465-4329 or 1-865-522-2800. Unreserved rooms will be released on October 1, 2009. The nearest hotel (at a higher rate) to the campus is Four Points by Sheraton Knoxville Cumberland House Hotel, and there are also plenty of other hotels in the Knoxville area.

Parking

The parking garage (G6 on the campus map) next to the University Center is for public parking and can be used on Friday, October 16. Remember to bring your parking ticket to the circus room to be stamped so you will not need to pay for it when you take your car. On Saturday, October 17, you can park your car on campus for free. The nearest parking garage to SERF is the 11th street parking garage (G13 on the campus map). However, if you stay in Knoxville Downtown Holiday Inn or Four Points by Sheraton Knoxville Cumberland House Hotel, you probably do not want to drive to the campus, it only takes about 10 and 5 minutes, respectively, to talk from the hotels to SERF.

Dinner (and Entertainment)

We are planning to have the dinner (and entertainment) in Friday evening on The Star of Knoxville for a two-hour riverboat cruise on the Tennessee River. This two hour cruise features delicious Prime Rib, Chicken Florentine, salad, baked potato, vegetables and a scrumptious dessert. You will also enjoy the sparkling sound of LIVE ENTERTAINMENT as they dance the night away. The cost for the dinner is about $35 ($25 for graduate students) per person. Since our group reservation must be pre-paid, please let us know whether you will attend the dinner when you make your registration. Please plan to pay with cash.

Registration

Please register online if you plan to attend the circus. A list of attendees can be found here.
