Explanation of variables in the database on Polish economy


All data are monthly data unless otherwise stated.

Date: This is the date of the last session of Warsaw Stock Exchange in a given month.  The data in the rows corresponding to a given Date relate to this month.

WIG: Warsaw Stock Exchange Index at the end of the day specified by Date.  See here for the definition.

Inflation: Monthly inflation rate in %.

Exch_1, Exch_2 :  The price of $100 in zloty (Polish currency) . Zloty is not a fully convertible currency yet. Exch_1 is the official exchange rate of Polish Central Bank in which export and import are calculated. Exch_2 is the mean exchange rate in the free market.

Empl_1 and Empl_2 contain the data on the number of people employed.  Average in 1995 corresponds to 100.  Empl_1 is number of all employees (linearly interpolated quarterly data), Empl_2 is the number of people employed in the "enterprise sector", which seems to be Empl_1 minus health care, education, government and farming employees.

r_1, r_2 and r_3 are interest rates. r_1 is the "rediscont credit" interest rate, the rate at which Central Bank lends money to comercial banks (?), r_2 is the average between maximal and minimal interest rates on call deposits in comercial banks, r_3 is a similar average for one year certificates of deposit.

Sal_1: avarage net salary and wage in real terms.  Average in 1995 corresponds to 100.  Linearly interpolated quarterly data.
Sal_2:  average net salary and wage in real terms in the "enterprise sector" (see Empl_2). Average in 1995 corresponds to 100.
