Course Policies

The class meets from 11:15 PM until 12:05 PM MWF in HSS 204 and on Thursdays in HSS 58.

Text: Calculus, Concepts and Contexts, (3rd edition) by James Stewart. We will cover chapters two through four.

Homework: Homework problems from the book will be assigned, but not collected. We will go over homework problems daily in class. In addition, there will be about twenty assignments to be handed in throughout the term. These will always be due on the second class day after they are handed out. It is important to keep up with the assignments. The best way to learn math is to struggle with lots of problems.

Grades: There will be 4 tests given during the term and a comprehensive final exam. The 4 tests and the homework will account for 80% and the final exam 20% of the grade. On the homework, I will count fewer points than the total that can be earned, so that everyone who works faithfully at the homework should get a good grade in it.

Grades will be computed on a scale no more stringent than 90-100% A, 87 - 89% A-, 83 - 86 B+, 80-82% B, 77 - 79% B-, etc. Consideration will be given to steady improvement throughout the term; of course consideration will also be given to a steady decline throughout the term.

Calculator: You may use a graphing calculator for this course, but it's really not essential. The Math Dept supports the TI-83 or TI-84, but you are not required to have this particular model. For example, any TI graphing calculator (the TI - 82, 85 or 86) or Sharp or Casio is fine. You may use a calculator that does not have symbolic algebraic routines on tests, i.e. no TI-89's, Ti-92's or the like.

Math 109 Math 109 (Algebra Workshop) is a self-paced tutorial for students who need additional help (as determined by placement exams, assessment exams or classroom performance). Students practice algebraic skills needed (but not necessarily taught) to master the material covered in Math 141. For more information go to http://www.math.utk.edu/Courses/M109.html It's S/NC grading, one credit, so your grade point will not be affected by it. The class is full right now, so keep trying at cpo.utk.ed
