Ideas for project topics by
resource: jones, sleeman - "diff. eq. and math. bio." : heart physiology, nerve impluse transmission, chemical reactions, predator prey, disease models (disease transmission in a population) de vries, hillen, lewis, muller, schonfisch - "a course in math. bio.": love affairs, host-parasite ellner, guckenheimer - "dynamic models in bio.": sexually transmitted disease, drug resistance, within-host dynamics of hiv mesterton-gibbons - "a concrete approach to math modelling": traffic models (plus more, but is repetitious of previous texts) britton - "essential math biology": evoltion (genetics), harvesting/fisheries, host/parasite, pred/prey, infectious disease, population genetics & evolution, invasive species, cellular biology (metabolic pathways, neural modeling, immunology & AIDS) brauer, castillo-chavez - "math. models in population bio. and epidemiology" good examples!! if we can have lab time in class - will likely work with the case studies found in this text. [the following reference i have not seen - i excerpted this from an old collegues website whom i used to teach math bio with in texas] braun, coleman, drew - "Differential Equation Models (Modules in Applied Mathematics)": This is a classic set of models which is accessible to calculus students, for a project which has simple math, this is ideal. These are all refering primarily to texts where the modeling involves differential equations. If you'd like to do a project on a different area (discrete time models, age or class structured population models, topological biology, etc) please let me know and I'll help you find appropriate resources. |
