CALCULUS
TI-83 CALCULATOR                                                         Instructor: Ms. Donna Stein

Graphing keys: located on the top row directly below the screen
y = (enter function)
Graph                      You should now see your graph on a standard size window

To locate your minimum value:
2nd
calc                           (located under the trace key directly under the screen). You will see a list:
    1. value
    2. root
    3. minimum          (push the button 3)
    4. maximum
    5. intersect
    6. dy/dx
    7. Sf(x) dx

On the bottom of your calculator screen you will see the words (with an x and a y value listed below).
"Left Bound?"           Using the arrow keys move the cursor to the left of the lowest value.
Hit enter.                   Now on the bottom of your screen you will see the words
"Right Bound?"          Using the arrow keys move the cursor to the right of the lowest value.
Hit enter.                   Now on the bottom of your screen you will see the word
Guess?
Hit enter.                    The bottom of the screen will give the values for x and y of the minimum point.

To locate your maximum value:
2nd
calc                              once again you will see the list above.
4. Maximum               (push  button 4)

On the bottom of your calculator screen you will see the words (with an x and a y value listed below).
"Left Bound?"            Using the arrow keys move the cursor to the left of the highest value.
Hit enter.                    Now on the bottom of your screen you will see the words
"Right Bound?"           Using the arrow keys move the cursor to the right of the highest value.
Hit enter.                    Now on the bottom of your screen you will see the word
"Guess?"
Hit enter.                    bottom of the screen will give the values for x and y of the maximum point.

To locate the roots, zeros, or solutions of your function.
 NOTE: YOU WILL NEED TO REPEAT THIS PROCESS FOR EACH ROOT

2nd
calc                             once again you will see the list above.
2. zero                         (push the button 2)
                                   On the bottom of your calculator screen you will see the words
"Left Bound?"            Using the arrow keys move the cursor to the left of the point where
                                    the graph crosses the x axis.
Hit enter.                     Now on the bottom of your screen you will see the words
"Right Bound?"            Using the arrow keys move the cursor to the right of of the point
                                    where the graph crosses the x axis.
Hit enter.                     Now on the bottom of your calculator screen you will see the word
"Guess?"
 Hit enter.                   The display for x = # (the answer) and y = 0 for the root.
                                   Continue this process for any other roots.

Computing the finite Integral    (Begin by graphing your function)

2nd
calc                             once again you will see the list above.
7.Sf(x)                         (push the button 7)
                                    On the bottom of your calculator screen you will see the words
"Lower Limit?"             Enter the lower limit (value of x)
x = #
Hit ENTER.                 Now on the bottom of your screen you will see the words
"Upper Limit?"            Enter the upper limit (value of x)
x = #
Hit ENTER.                 The definite integral of the function is shaded on  your calculator screen.
                                    The display at the base of the screen gives the value of the integral.

Linear Regression Analysis    (Enter a set of data- and approximate the linear equation)

Enter the Data:
STAT
1: Edit
Enter                          You should see 3 columns - L1, L2, L3. Use the arrows to get to the
                                   top of each list. Now Hit:
Clear
Enter                          Do this for each list. After you have cleared the lists.
                                   Use the arrows to get in the L1 column and enter the x values. Hit
Enter                           after each number
                                    Use the arrows to get in the L2 column and enter the y values. Hit
Enter                           after each number
2'nd
quit                             You should now see a blank screen

Find the equation of the line:

STAT                          Use the right arrow to highlight
CALC                        You will now see a long list. Use the down arrow to highlight
8: LinReg (a + bx)      Be SURE to scroll down to # 8. Do NOT use # 4.
Enter
Enter                           You will now see:    LinReg
                                                                   y = a + bx
                                                                   a =  #
                                                                   b =  #
                                                                   r 2 #
