Basic course data:

M142 -- Calculus II, Fall 2009 (Sec 6)
Instructor: Jochen Denzler

MWRF 10:10-11:00, HSS 57

Note: the Thursday meeting is also 10:10-11:00, overriding the usual Thursday slots that go like 9:40-10:55.

NOTE: Office hours are posted on my homepage, but I also accommodate drop-in when possible, and feel free to make an appointment if posted hours don't suit you.

Textbook: Stewart Calculus 3rd edition (see bookstore for detail info)
--- As far as only my section of 142 is concerned: I will teach the standard material, and it is covered in newer and older editions and by different authors in a similar way. But I do not teach in a style such as to regurgitate the textbook. You need *some* appropriate textbook as a study help, and I will use *this* particular textbook for homework and other references.
Apart from this practical need of homework references, I have no stake in which textbook you are actually using and you are free to act as is convenient for you regarding textbook choices. If you have a reason or desire to consider other textbooks or editions, feel free to ask me for advice about feasibility (I may need to have a look at them to give wise input). In this as well as other classes I teach, I encourage you to learn primarily from the lecture and use a textbook as a supplementary tool for redigesting covered material, and for glancing ahead before the lecture and in preparation for it.
If any questions or issues make the lecture for you difficult to follow (more difficult than is natural for the material), I urge you to ask questions (in class or in the office hour). Don't be intimidated by the wrong belief that your seat neighbor, who is silently nodding to everything, seems to understand it all while you are scratching your head and go `what on earth...?'

Syllabus: amended version of Aug 28, necessitated by the unavailability of a paper grader

A class journal is available, where key lecture contents and homework assignments will be posted for your convenience. However, I do not commit to update this immediately after each class, and your primary attendance responsibility to obtain this information is not meant to be removed od reduced by the presence of the class journal.

The Final Exam for this class is scheduled by university policy for Wed, Dec 09, 10:15-12:15, in the usual classroom. In-class exams will be scheduled at 7-10 days notice (and roughly equidistantly) at convenient break points depending on the progress with the material.

Supplementary Material:

Partial fraction decomposition

As I have been teaching partial fraction decomposition in a top-down style that is different from Stewart (Sec 5.7 and Appendix G), I provide these notes, which are closer in style to the classroom exposition.
