About UT Math REU
Here's What Participants had to Say About the 2007 REU:
“I really enjoyed every day of my summer, specially when I was stuck onreal problem (problem with no solutions in any book). My slogan was: Work
hard Play hard. I believe that the REU at UTK has been my unique
opportunity to learn about all these areas in Mathematics in 2 months, to
work with bright students, to live typical days of researchers, to enjoy
outdoor events such as hiking and rafting."
“This was a good introduction to what mathematical research is like.”
“The weekend group excursions were a lot of fun; the area provided plenty
of opportunities for hiking, rafting, and other outdoor activities.”
“We got a lot of work done. It was definitely a productive summer! We
worked on a project about solving a “phase-change” problem using Matlab
and spent a lot of time writing and debugging Matlab codes. So, if you
want to find out whether applied math/computer science is what you want to
do in the future, you should definitely apply for this REU program. Dr.
Plaut took us to white water rafting, hiking and other varied excursions.
It was so much fun!”
“Great applied math and computational science project with Dr. A!!!”
“I think the REU program was a great way to spend my summer. I made money
and pursued something that I really enjoyed. I learned a lot about the
research process and the REU program helped me make a decision concerning
math graduate school. In general, it was a well spent eight weeks of my
summer!”
“It’s helpful to meet and work with other math majors with different
backgrounds and experiences. To future participants: expect to be
challenged." updated: 01/4/08
