Graduating Seniors:
-- Rachel Graves was awarded a National Science Foundation VIGRE fellowship
in the math graduate program at the University of Georgia.
-- Bill Holmes was awarded a teaching assistantship in the math graduate program
at Indiana University.
-- Nick Moore was awarded a teaching assistantship in the math graduate program
at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Summer 2005 Research and Internships:
-- Nick Boatman was accepted into the REU program at Tulane University.
-- Kate Frederick was awarded the position of teaching assistant for the math
Tennessee Governor's School this summer.
-- Andrew Gaston was awarded an internship in the National Security Agency's
Director's Summer Program.
-- Dave Herzog was accepted into the REU program in math this summer at Texas
A&M.
-- Keith Langston was accepted into the REU program in math this summer at UTK-ORNL.
-- Eliza Martin was accepted into the REU program in math this summer at UTK-ORNL.
-- Erick Smith was accepted into the REU program in physics this summer at University
of Wyoming and the SURAP Infared Observatory.
-- Stacey Raden was awarded a Pre-Service Teacher's internship in mathematics
through ORNL and the Department of Education.
-- Britni Ratliff (Chemistry major, math minor) will participate in the SURF
NIST Boulder program this summer.
Scholarships and other awards:
-- The John H. Barrett Prize for outstanding mathematics majors was awarded
to Nick Moore, Jordan Schettler and Rachel N Graves.
-- The John M. Allen prizes for top score on the Allen exam on freshman mathematics
was awarded to Bryon Aragam and Bryan Burke (tie for first place) and Keith
Langston (second place).
-- This year's recipients of Cooper D. Schmitt Memorial Scholarships were Megan
Bethmann, Christina Bishop, Bryan Burke, Kate Frederick, Jeffrey Hankins, David
Herzog, and Stacy Raden.
-- The James A. Cooley Scholarships this year were awarded to Amy Ellwanger
and Randall Rudolph.
-- The Lucille and Herbert Lee Memorial Scholarships this year were awarded
to Amy Cartier, Andrew Carter, Joshua Garrett, Chad Jones, Terence Long, Eliza
Martin, and Hai Nguyen.
-- The Polly Anna Harris Scholarship was awarded to Ben Brabson.
-- Britni Ratliff was awarded one of three national Goldwater scholarships from
UT this year and was awarded a Melvin Rhenium scholarship from the chemistry
department.
-- Kate Frederick and Britni Ratliff were inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honors
Society.

Teams:
-- The UT Putnam Team (Nick Boatman, Hai Nguyen (business, math), and Eric
Mueller (engineering), Bryon Aragam (alternate)) placed a phenomenal17th out
of 515 top colleges and universities in North America. The Putnam is the nation's
oldest and most prestigious math contest for undergraduates. Only the top five
institutions were announced publicly, and these indicate the level of competition:
MIT, Princeton, Duke, University of Waterloo, and CalTech.
-- The UT Math Jeopardy Team, consisting of Nick Boatman, Josh Steadmon
(CS, math), James Ralph (CS, math) and Keith Langston (CS, math), won the regional
finals at Meredith College in Raleigh, NC.
