5th Year Masters Degree

Mathematics majors have the opportunity to earn a BS in mathematics and a masters' degree in five years. The fifth year MS in math is suitable for highly motivated students pursing an accelerated path through the major, usually earning an honors BS in the process. The fifth year MS in statistics (see below) requires a standard path through the major and may appeal to students who enjoy analysis of data.

Fifth Year MS in Math

Students may earn a BS and an MS in mathematics in five years as follows. (See the Graduate Catalog for more information on the MS degree.)
1) Complete 94 hours of undergraduate credit prior to the senior year, and enroll in at most 15 hours per semester in the senior year.
2) Do not complete the requirements for an undergraduate degree prior to the end of the senior year (for example, postpone one upper-level distribution requirement until the last semester of the senior year).
3) Complete an additional 9 hours of 400 or 500-level mathematics courses for graduate credit. These courses must be taken in the senior year and may not be used to fill any requirements for the math major.
4) In the fifth year, complete 9 hours per semester of graduate courses fulfilling the requirements for an MS degree, including two graduate sequences and MS project.
5) Complete 3 graduate hours during the summer preceding or following the fifth year.

The Mathematics Department awards graduate assistantships each year. The assistantship pays graduate tuition, as well as a stipend for living expenses. Students who fill all requirements of the mathematics honors program will be given priority for a graduate teaching assistantship from the UT Mathematics Department beginning in the academic year following award of the BS degree.
