TITLE: "Improved particle filters and an application in the problem of multi-target tracking-Part I"
ABSTRACT: A novel approach for improving particle filters is presented. The suggested approach is based on Girsanov's change of measure theorem for stochastic differential equations. Girsanov's theorem is used to design a Markov Chain Monte Carlo step which is appended to the particle filter and aims to bring the particle filter samples closer to the observations. The proposed approach is applied in the problem of multi-target tracking for both linear and nonlinear observation models.  Also, a simple Metropolis Monte Carlo algorithm for tackling the target-observation association problem is presented. The numerical results show that the suggested approach can improve significantly the performance of a particle filter. The talk will be based on joint works with Ron Mahler and Panos Stinis.

TITLE: When is $k[f]$ the ring of constants of a derivation? (Part 2)
ABSTRACT: We will begin with a brief introduction to derivations. Next, we consider $k[f]$, a subdomain of a polynomial ring over a field $k$, and consider some necessary conditions for $k[f]$ to be the field of constants of some derivation.  When these conditions are fulfilled, we will demonstrate a construction of the desired derivation.

TITLE: "Discontinuous Galerkin approximation to the Vlasov-Poisson system"
ABSTRACT: One of the simplest model problems in the kinetic theory of plasma--physics is the Vlasov-Poisson (VP) system with periodic boundary conditions. Such system describes the evolution of a plasma of charged particles (electrons and ions) under the effects of the transport and self-consistent electric field. In this talk, we construct a family of Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for the approximation of the Vlasov-Poisson system. The schemes are based on the coupling of DG approximation to the Vlasov equation (transport equation) and several finite element (conforming, non-conforming and mixed) approximations to the Poisson problem. We shall present the error analysis in the case of smooth solutions and discuss some further properties of the proposed methods.

The talk is based on joint works with J.A. Carrillo (Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona) and Chi-Wang Shu (Brown University). If time allows, we shall also comment on some ongoing research on the issue of approximating non-smooth solutions of the VP system.

TITLE: "Time and Space Parallization Using the Parareal Algorithm"
ABSTRACT: The "parareal" algorithm (first proposed in 2001 by JL Lions, Y Mayday, G Turinici) appears to be an effective algorithm for time parallelization of PDEs when many processors are available. We present the main idea of parareal and how space parallelization can be incorporated to achieve time-and-space parallelization. We apply the algorithm to a diffusion-reaction PDE (cable equation) coupled to a system of highly nonlinear ODEs governing the source (reaction) term, which models electrical propagation in cardiac myocytes, and compare the performance of various time-stepping schemes (explicit and implicit, high order and low order, adaptive and non-adaptive).

ABSTRACT: We will first decipher all the obscure words used in the title, discuss some existence results for complete Calabi-Yau metrics on crepant resoutions of singularities, and as an application, show some non-trivial examples of Ricci-flat manifolds.
