PROBABILITY SEMINAR
TIME: 10:10 – 11:00 a.m.
ROOM: AC 113
SPEAKER: Andreas Basse-O’Connor (University of Tennessee)
TITLE: “Stochastic integration on the real line” - continued
ABSTRACT: Stochastic integration on compact intervals is very well developed, and it is well-known
that each finite L^0-valued measure on the predictable sigma-field corresponds to a semimartingale. In
this talk we will consider stochastic integration on the real line with respect to sigma-finite measures on
the predictable sigma-field. Such an integration theory will e.g. enable us to define moving averages in
full generality. We provided necessary and sufficient conditions for the integral to exist and as an
example the generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process is seen to fit nice into this setting. Finally, we will
discuss martingales on the real line and their properties as time tends to minus infinity. This will give us
conditions for some improper integrals to exist.

COMPUTATIONAL/APPLIED MATH & DE SEMINAR
TIME: 3:35 – 4:25 p.m.
ROOM: HBB 112
SPEAKER: Suzanne Lenhart, The University of Tennessee
TITLE: “Optimal Harvesting in Fishery Models”
ABSTRACT: We discuss two types of partial differential equation models of fishery harvesting
problems. We consider steady state spatial models and diffusive spatial-temporal models. We
characterize the distribution of harvest effort which maximizes the harvest yield, and in the steady state
case, also minimizes the cost of the effort. We show numerical results to illustrate various cases. The
results inform ongoing debate about the use of reserves (regions where fishing is not allowed), and are
increasingly relevant as technology enables enforcement of spatially structured harvest constraints.

Wednesday, April 28

ANALYSIS SEMINAR
TIME: 3:35 p.m.
ROOM: AC 113
SPEAKER: Greg Knese, University of California, Irvine
TITLE: “Pick interpolation and stable polynomials”
ABSTRACT: We will survey finite interpolation theorems for bounded analytic functions and the theory
of stable polynomials in one variable. The two topics will then be connected via a sums of squares
formula. Recent results in higher dimensions that exploit this connection will also be presented.

Friday, April 30

COLLOQUIUM and SIAM STUDENT CHAPTER SEMINAR
TIME: 3:35 – 4:35 p.m.
ROOM: HBB 102
SPEAKER: Mansoor Haider, North Carolina State University
TITLE: “Mathematical Modeling of Cell-Matrix Interactions in Natural and Tissue Engineered Articular Cartilage”
ABSTRACT: Articular cartilage is the primary load bearing soft tissue in diarthrodial joints such as the
knee, shoulder and hip. Cartilage is comprised of a solid phase extracellular matrix that is saturated by
an interstitial fluid phase. Homeostasis in the tissue is maintained by a single population of cells called
chondrocytes. Since cartilage contains no blood vessels or nerve endings, the local environment of the
chondrocytes is known to strongly influence cellular metabolic activities. In this talk, I will present
mathematical models of biomechanical and biochemical interactions between the cells of articular
cartilage and their local environment. I will also discuss relevance of the models to understanding the
role of physical factors in osteoarthritis, and to the development of tissue engineering strategies for
cartilage repair using hydrogel scaffold materials.
Refreshments available in AC113 at 3:15 p.m.
