TITLE: On the ABC Conjecture
ABSTRACT: S. Mochizuki has recently claimed to have prove the ABC Conjecture.  This is a very strong conjecture, with numerous consequences in number theory.  If correct, it would be the most important result in mathematics since the proof of the Poincaré Conjecture.  In this series of talks we will motivate, state, give equivalent statements, prove/discuss consequences and study related problems to the ABC Conjecture.  (We will not give Mochizuki's "proof", which is extremely technical and advanced.)  At the very least, the first few talks should be accessible to all, including graduate students of other areas.

TITLE: Jump-adapted discretization schemes for Levy driven SDEs, Part 3.
ABSTRACT: An algorithm for weak approximation of stochastic differential equations driven by pure jump Levy processes is presented. The method uses adaptive non-uniform discretization based on the times of large jumps of the driving process. To approximate the solution between these times, the small jump noise is replaced with a Brownian motion. This technique avoids the simulation of the increments of the Levy process and in many cases achieves a better rate of convergence than the traditional Euler scheme with equal time steps.

TITLE: Ecological Models and Data in R continued

TITLE: The Fiber Dimension of Analytic Operators
ABSTRACT: In this talk, I will discuss the fiber dimension of an invariant subspace of an analytic operator. The main goal of the seminar is to prove a formula which shows that the fiber dimension is a limit which involves the dimension of the projections onto the orthogonal complements of T^{k}H. The results proven are largely be based on the work on Fang (from 2005). If time permits, we will show a connection between the Fiber Dimension and an algebraic quantity known as the Samuel multiplicity.

TITLE: Svarc Miller Lemma: A Proof By Definition
ABSTRACT: This purpose of his presentation will be to prove the Svarc-Milnor lemma. I will be following a paper by N. Brodskiy, J. Dydak, and A. Mitra entitled "Svarc-Milnor Lemma: A Proof By Definition". The idea behind the paper is that certain group actions on Metric spaces induce metrics on the groups whose resulting coarse structure can be obtained from the action. Methods of geometric group theory and large scale geometry will be introduced.

SPEAKER:  Prof. Ken Stephenson
TITLE:  Edge-Flipping for Fun and Profit
ABSTRACT:  Circles have been a source of fascination and inspiration in mathematics for well over two millenia, yet they continue to surprise. The late Bill Thurston gave us the wonderful notion of "circle packing": you provide an abstract combinatorial object, and the circles spontaneously endow it with concrete geometry. We will probe this geometry in a live performance using my software "CirclePack".  In particular, we study combinatorial "edge-flips" and the geometric effects. This serves both for fun and for (mathematical) profit through theory and applications. The talk will be visually based and requires no particular mathematical background.
