Monday, November 7

ALGEBRA SEMINAR
TIME: 2:30 - 3:20 p.m.
ROOM: Ayres B004
SPEAKER: Prof. Luis Finotti
TITLE: "An Overview of p-Adic Numbers"
ABSTRACT: Before we approach the abstract construction of Witt vectors, it's fitting to discuss p-adic numbers, as it is the main motivation for the construction.  So, in this first lecture we will give a brief overview of p-adic numbers, briefly discussing its construction, properties and important applications in number theory. It will mostly be a survey with very few proofs, and thus quite accessible to all.

PROBABILITY SEMINAR
TIME:  3:35 – 4:25
ROOM:  Ayres 122
SPEAKER: Prof. Jan Rosinski
TITLE: "Ito-Nisio Theorem in Skorohod space. Part 1: Topology and probability on Skorohod space"
ABSTRACT: This part will serve as an introduction, directed mostly to graduate students. Skorohod space D[0,1] is a natural carrier for paths of processes with jumps, similarly as C[0,1] is a carrier for Brownian motion. We will review basic facts on Skorohod metric, compactness criteria, and the weak convergence of probability measures on D[0,1].

DE/APPLIED and COMPUTATIONAL MATH SEMINAR
TIME: 3:35 – 4:25 p.m.
ROOM: Ayres 113
SPEAKER: Mr. Jason Bintz
TITLE: "Basic Reproduction Number illustrated with an Epi. Model for Clostridium
DifficileTransmission in Healthcare Settings"

Thursday, November 10

TOPOLOGY SEMINAR
TIME: 12:45 – 1:35 p.m.
ROOM: Ayres G004
SPEAKER: Prof. Ben Cooper, University of VA
TITLE: "Handle slides and localizations"
ABSTRACT: I will review recent work by myself and V. Krushkal on category theoretic analogues of the colored Jones polynomials and quantum spin networks. Category theoretic analogues of mapping class group representations will be defined.

JUNIOR COLLOQUIUM
TIME: 3:35 – 4:25
ROOM: Ayres 405
SPEAKER: Prof. Ben Cooper
TITLE: "Using math to get along with your roommates"
ABSTRACT: We answer the question of whether it is always possible to share fairly with your fellow roommates in the affirmative.

Pizza will be available at 3:15 p.m.

Friday, November 11

COLLOQUIUM
TIME: 3:35 – 4:25 pm
ROOM: Ayres 405
SPEAKER: Prof. Luis Finotti
TITLE: "Lifting the j-Invariant and Computations with Witt Vectors"
ABSTRACT: B. Mazur asked about the nature of the functions that give the coordinates of the
j-invariant of the canonical lifting of an ordinary elliptic curve as a Witt vector.  J. Tate asked about the
possibility to extend those functions to values for which the canonical lifting is not defined.  After a brief introduction giving the proper background, a definite answer to Tate's questions and rather precise descriptions for the coordinate functions will be given.  The data obtained prior the proofs and the proofs themselves required a new approach to computations with Witt vectors, which are quite demanding, and these results will be discussed as well.

Refreshments will be available in Ayres 401 at 3:15 p.m.
