TITLE: Numerical study for structural and dynamic bifurcations of divergence-free
vectors. Solutions of the incompressible fluid equations in different physical
formulations can be viewed as one-parameter families of divergence-free vector
fields with time $t$ as the parameter. Structural stability and structural
bifurcation are presented in the talk, both theoretically and numerically.
Boundary layer separation, symmetric stability and interior structural transition
are taken into consideration. A driven cavity flow with Reynolds number Re=100,000,
a strong shear flow induced by a temperature jump, and the secondary instability
of a rising plume in Boussinesq convection, are chosen as numerical examples
to verify the stability and bifurcation classifications. In addition, such
a methodology can be applied to the investigation of dynamic stability and
bifurcation of a class of fluid equations at a numerical level. This work
will provide an approach to understand many fundamental phenomena in fluid
dynamics, since the pattern and the structure of the velocity field characterizes
the flow.
REFRESHMENTS WILL BE SERVED IN AYRES HALL ROOM 119 AT 3:00 P.M.
