Monday, November 23

DE/Applied Math Seminar
Time: 3:35pm
ROOM: HBB 112
Speaker: Nicholas Gewecke
Title: "Solidification of Binary Alloys -- Mushy Zones"
Abstract: In this talk, we will discuss past work that has been done with regards to the formation of mushy zones, along with the current work being done by the presenter.  In particular, we will discuss some of the challenges that arise when dealing with the mushy zone problem on a finite-depth domain, along with the assumptions that are typically used to negate these challenges, and the approaches being utilized to overcome these challenges.

PROBABILITY SEMINAR
TIME:  3:35 – 4:25 p.m.
ROOM:  HBB 132
SPEAKER:  Professor Xia Chen
TITLE:  “Riesz potentials of Brownian intersection measures and their roles in modeling random polymers”
ABSTRACT: The Riesz potentials of Brownian intersection measures have been studied by Donsker and Varadhan for their role in “polaron problems” originated in electrostatics. In this talk, I will link the Riesz potentials to the model of random polymers, give answer to some basic problems regarding to this model, and raise more problems.
