TOPOLOGY SEMINAR
TIME: 10:10 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
ROOM: Ayres Hall 309B
SPEAKER: Professor Morwen Thistlethwaite
TITLE: Introduction to hyperbolic structures on 3-manifolds II
CANDIDATE FOR THE POSITION OF THEORETICAL OR COMPUTATIONAL EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY
TIME: 12:20 p.m. - 1:10 p.m.
ROOM: 511 Dabney-Buehler
SPEAKER: Dr. Gavin Conant
University of Dublin
Department of Genetics
TITLE: Time and chance: Modeling evolution after genome duplication
ABSTRACT: A genome duplication in the ancestor of the modern brewer's yeast
Saccharomyces cerevisiae gives us the opportunity to study how evolution can
shape massive genetic redundancy into structural and phenotypic novelty. Using
several types of evolutionary models, we attempt to understand the effects
of this duplication on the lifestyle of brewer's yeast and on the organization
of its genome.
DE/APPLIED AND COMPUTATIONAL MATH SEMINAR
TIME: 3:35 p.m.- 4:25 p.m.
ROOM: Ayres Hall 309A
SPEAKER: Associate Professor Tim Schulze
TITLE: Fast kinetic Monte-Carlo simulation
ABSTRACT: I will review the topic of kinetic Monte-Carlo (KMC) simulation,
with a particular
emphasis on the simulation of crystal growth and evolution. Then I will discuss
two new, fast algorithms and finish with a discussion of a hybrid scheme for
combining KMC with molecular dynamics.
