MASTER'S DEFENSE
TIME: 10:00
ROOM: Ayres 404
SPEAKER: Ms. Yang Shen
Her committee is composed of Professors: Maroulas, Younger, and Malikopoulos.

PROBABILITY SEMINAR
TIME: 3:35 - 4:25 p.m.
ROOM: Ayres Hall 112
SPEAKER: Prof. Jan Rosinski
TITLE: Wiener chaos, Malliavin calculus, and the Central Limit Theorem, Part 2.
ABSTRACT: Wiener-Ito chaos expansion has some analogy with the Taylor expansion of the classical analysis. Building on this analogy we will describe the fundamental notions of the Malliavin calculus: the Malliavin derivative (the gradient operator) and the divergence operator (Skorohod integral).  Using these tools, a short proof of a surprising criterion for the asymptotic independence of Wiener chaos can be obtained. This criterion, in turn, yields a simple proof of a multidimensional version of the celebrated Central Limit Theorem for Wiener chaos, the so called fourth moment theorem of Nualart and Peccati, and gives a framework for new results on limits of Wiener chaos.

TOPOLOGY SEMINAR
TIME: 12:40 p.m.
ROOM: Ayres 406
SPEAKER: Mr. Keith Penrod
TITLE: Big homotopy groups
ABSTRACT: We push the boundaries of possibility for algebraic topology by extending the notion of homotopy theory to any compact, connected linear set, rather than simply using the real interval.  The notion of "big fundamental group" was introduced by Jim Cannon and Greg Conner.  We explain this definition and explore some possibilities for expanding from there, including defining the analog for higher homotopy groups.

Wednesday, November 21
