ANALYSIS SEMINAR

ROOM: Ayres Hall 320
SPEAKER: Prof. Geir Arne Hjelle
Washington University, St. Louis
TITLE: Approximating the modulus of an inner function
ABSTRACT: In 1981 Peter Jones asked if inner functions can be uniformly approximated by interpolating Blaschke products. The problem is still open. We will show that the question has a positive answer if we restrict attention to the modulus. That is, given an inner function f and c > 0, there is an interpolating Blaschke product B such that | |f(z)| - |B(z)| | < c for all z in the unit disk. The proof is based on the Corona construction by Lennart Carleson. This is joint work with A. Nicolau.

GRADUATE STUDENT TEACHING SEMINAR
Website: http://www.math.utk.edu/~eaton/Math598.htm (for handouts and updated schedule of events)

TIME: 3:35 p.m. - 4:25 p.m.
ROOM: Ayres Hall 314
TITLE: Developing a Syllabus: What to think about before the first day of class
Now that we have an idea of how we would like to teach our won class, how do we make that vision clear to our students? How do we make sure that the assignments and assessments follow our classroom philosophy? And what else do we need to remember about policies and procedures? We will talk about different types of syllabi and what things we should be thinking about as we sit down to write or adapt a syllabus for class.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2006

TOPOLOGY SEMINAR

TIME: 10:10 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
ROOM: Ayres Hall 309B
SPEAKER: Paul Lewis
TITLE: Elementary hyperbolic geometry III

PROBABILITY SEMINAR

TIME: 11:15 a.m. - 12:05 p.m.
ROOM: Ayres Hall 309B
SPEAKER: Professor Zeng, University of Missouri at Kansas City
TITLE: "Risk & Minimizing Hedge for a Filtering Micromovement Model"

JUNIOR COLLOQUIUM
The Junior Colloquium is aimed primarily at undergraduate students, but all are most welcome to attend. (This is fourth in our series of Junior Colloquia)

TIME: 3:30 p.m.
ROOM: Ayres Hall 214
SPEAKER: Dr. Tim Schulze
TITLE: Pentominoes
ABSTRACT: Pentominoes are generalizations of the more familiar dominoes and tetras. In this case, five square tiles are arranged adjacently to form shapes that present the tempting and potentially addictive possibility of fitting them neatly into a rectangular region. Despite the challenge this presents when considered as a sort of jigsaw puzzle, there are a large number of solutions. This talk will discuss an algorithm to determine all of the ways the pentominoes can be fit into a given rectangular region.

Pizza will be served immediately before the talk.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2006

COLLOQUIUM

TIME: 3:35 - 4:35 p.m.
ROOM: 214 Ayres Hall
SPEAKER: Assistant Professor Jochen Denzler
TITLE: Long time asymptotics for nonlinear diffusion
ABSTRACT: This talk gives a survey of recent work on convergence rates to the scaling profile of the fast diffusion and porous medium equations, and other nonlinear diffusion equations, including joint work by the author with McCann on 4th order diffusion equations, and some forthcoming work joint with McCann and Koch.

REFRESHMENTS WILL BE SERVED IN AYRES HALL ROOM 119 AT 3:00 P.M.
