PROBABILITY SEMINAR
TIME:  10:10 – 11:00 a.m.
ROOM:  Ayres 209A

SPEAKER:  Associate Professor Min Kang, NC State University
TITLE:  “Fluctuations for the Tagged Particle from a Disordered
              Exclusion Process in Non-equilibrium”
ABSTRACT:  We study the large space and time scale behavior of a totally asymmetric, nearest-neighbor exclusion process in one dimension with random jump rates attached to the particles.  When slow particles are sufficiently rare, the system has a phase transition.  At low densities there are no equilibrium distributions, and on the hydrodynamic scale the initial profile is transported rigidly. We elaborate this situation further by finding the correct order of correction from the hydrodynamic limit and analyzing the nature of this fluctuation limit together with distributional bounds averaged over the disorder.

DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS AND COMPUTATIONAL MATHEMATICS SEMINAR

ROOM:  Ayres 309B

SPEAKER:  Associate Professor James Conant
TITLE:  “A gentle introduction to the homology of Out(F_n) Part IV”
ABSTRACT:  We aim to give the necessary background to understand the current state of knowledge of the rational homology of Out(F_n).

Friday, November 14

MATHEMATICS COLLOQUIUM
(Midpoint Review)
TIME:  3:35 – 4:35 p. m.
ROOM:  Ayres 214

SPEAKER:  Professor Luis Finotti
TITLE:  “Lifting the j-Invariant”
ABSTRACT:  We will start with a brief introduction to elliptic curves and continue to answer questions of Mazur and Tate on the relation between j-invariants of an ordinary elliptic curve and its canonical lifting modulo $p2$.  We then will discuss the questions modulo $p3$ with emphasis in how to surpass the computational difficulties to form
a proper conjecture in this case.
