APPLIED MATH/DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS AND
COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE SEMINAR
TIME: 3:35 p.m. - 4:25 p.m.
ROOM: Ayres Hall 309A
SPEAKER: Don Hinton
TITLE: A mass, a spring, and a string
A vibration problem is considered. A mass M is attached to a spring at the
right end of a string of length L and variable density. The left end is fixed.
For a given total mass constraint, the problem of minimizing the first eigenvalue
is analyzed.
