ROOM: 214 Ayres Hall
SPEAKER: Washington Mio, Professor of Mathematics

TITLE: Planar Shapes in Computer Vision
ABSTRACT: Shapes and textures present in an image are two key elements in
understanding the way the image is perceived. Many image models attempt to
capture the beautifully intricate, yet very natural, interaction between these
somewhat independent components of images. In this talk, I will discuss some
mathematical models of shapes of plane curves and geometric shape-analysis
algorithms derived from the models. Shapes are viewed as elements of a quotient
space of a Riemannian manifold of curves and geodesics are used to quantify
shape divergence, interpolate shapes, and produce statistical models for families
of shapes. Many illustrations of shape geodesics will be presented, as well
as results of various shape clustering and sampling experiments.
REFRESHMENTS WILL BE SERVED IN AYRES HALL ROOM 119 AT 3:00 P.M.
