TITLE: “A Fully Nonlinear PDE Approach for Semigeostrophic Flows"
ABSTRACT: In this talk I shall first introduce B. J. Hoskin's semigeostrophic flow equations,
which has been widely used in meteorology and oceanography to model slowly varying flows
constrained by rotation and stratification, I shall then describe a fully nonlinear reformulation
of the model due to Benamou and Brenier and briefly overview recent PDE results for the model.
Finally. I shall discuss some latest developments in numerical methods for computing solutions of the model.

TITLE: “A Seminar on LaTeX”
ABSTRACT: What Is LaTeX? and How Can I Use It To Write My Thesis/Dissertation? Wondering the answers to these questions? Come to the Seminar on LaTeX and find out. Seminar is on Wednesday, October 29 from 3:30 – 4:30 in Ayres 214. Pizza will be served!!
This seminar will be broken down into two parts:
PART 1 (3:30 – 4:00) – The Basics of LaTeX … this portion of the seminar will go over what you need to know how to get started typing up some documents in LaTeX. No prior knowledge of LaTeX will be assumed.
PART 2 (4:00 – 4:30) – Using LaTeX to Write Your Thesis or Dissertation … this portion of the seminar will go over how to use the LaTeX thesis/dissertation template developed my our own Mike Saum.

TITLE: “Spatial Ordering and Anisotropy in Surface Stress Domains and Nanostructural Evolution”
ABSTRACT: The role of elastic interaction has been well recognized for various growth modes and nanostructural self-organization on solid surfaces. Examples include spontaneous formation of stress domains in reconstructed surfaces or in-phase-separating monolayers, meandering and bunching of surface steps, and quantum dot formation in heteroepitaxial thin film growth. The long-range spatial ordering in these strain-mediated nanostructural evolution phenomena on solid surfaces is critically dependent on the anisotropy. A universal formulation has been developed to examine the energetically favored orientation with respect to parameters that represent theanisotropy in elasticity and applied stress.
