Math 117 - Mathematical Reasoning (Honors)

Math 117 - Honors section of Math 113.

Math 117 is not calculus-based and includes ideas from ancient to modern mathematics. The emphasis is on logic, reasoning, and constructing rigorous arguments.

For an honors student, there are several reasons to choose Math 117 instead of Math 113:

Both Math 113 and Math 117 require about the same amount of work for success. Math 117 does not require a strong background in mathematics; the only requirement is a composite ACT score of 31 or higher. This can be waived with the permission of the instructor or the department.

About the Instructor: In Fall 2007, Math 117 will be taught by Amy F. Szczepanski. Orginally from New York State, Dr. Szczepanski came to UT in 2003 (by way of California, New Jersey, and a few other places) and spent the 2003-2004 school year designing the course that is now Math 113/Math 117. During Spring 2006, she taught a 100-level Quantitative Reasoning Seminar in the University Honors program (topic: Cryptology). Her mathematical interests include Math and the Fiber Arts (quilting and knitting), Math Education, and non-commutative algebra.
