Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Frazier and several members of the Professional Development Project group, the Department of Mathematics is proud to offer:

GTA Teacher Training Course - Facilitated by Bob Guest and Carrie Eaton (1 credit S/NC grading - See Pam to Register)

All First Year GTAs and GAs (i.e. any first year student on the payroll) *must* sign up for this class. Any other GTAs are welcome to sign-up as space allows. Any GTA/GA who does not sign up for credit can attend as their schedule and/or interest allows. If you have questions, check with Bob (bguest) or Carrie (eaton).

Best Practices in Teaching—This is a seminar provided by the University of Tennessee Graduate School focuses on topics of teaching that are important across disciplines.  It is open to faculty and lecturers as well as graduate students.

 

Chronicle of Higher Education—This is a journal that focuses on issues in higher education.  The library gives you free online access.

 

CNN.com article—This article talks about the rise of TA training programs as academic jobs are starting to place more stress on teaching in making offers, especially at private colleges and universities.

 

Introduction to Designing Online Learning—A module developed by an ITC e-learning consulting on designing online learning modules.

 

ITC Grants - ITC has several grants available, including a grant program exclusively for graduate TAs so that they can develop course material that takes advantage of the University’s technology resources.

 

Tomorrow’s Professor—A listserv of articles related to teaching, research, and all things academia.  Very interesting and stimulating articles.  We will use this listserve material to prompt discussion during the spring seminar.

Developing Exams, Homework and other Assessments

 

Do you wonder if that test distribution is you or them?  Are students memorizing or are they learning.  In this seminar, we will talk about setting goals and expectations for your students and centering exams, homework and other assessments around those expectations.   We also talk about how to form assessment problems and questions, from wording to concept reinforcement.
